Debunking Mattress Myths

When embarking on the journey to find the perfect mattress, the various options and information available can be quite overwhelming. This is particularly true with the abundance of age-old mattress myths still circulating the internet. We’re here to help separate fact from fiction so you can shop for a new mattress with confidence.

Myth #1: Bigger Means Better

While you may believe that a larger mattress is more comfortable, this isn’t necessarily the case. Considering your room size is crucial; for instance, a king-size bed might not be the most practical for a studio apartment. If you’re a solo sleeper without bed-sharing, a twin or full-sized mattress could be perfectly suitable. On the other hand, if you share your bed with a partner or a pet, a queen or king might be the best option. If you need to determine which mattress size would suit your space and additional sleepers, check out our Ultimate Mattress Size Guide.

Myth #2: Firmness Equals Support

Historically, it was believed that a firmer mattress provided the best support and ultimately the best night's sleep, but this is misleading. Stomach and back sleepers typically prefer firmer mattresses to ensure proper spine alignment. Side sleepers, however, need a softer feel to help alleviate pressure points on their shoulders and hips. A soft or medium mattress is still supportive and may be the right choice for you, depending on your preferred sleep position(s).

Myth #3: You Must Use a Box Spring

Box springs are a widely known support standard in the mattress industry. While they remain a suitable choice for many mattresses, there are alternative options available that might better complement your bed. Flat foundations, a modern evolution of the traditional box spring, offer excellent support for your mattress, contributing to its longevity and performance. For those considering an upgrade, adjustable bases are an increasingly popular option. When flat, an adjustable base provides a solid foundation to support your mattress. However, power bases also allow you to adjust your position when watching TV, reading, or sleeping. We recommend pairing all Sealy® and Cocoon™ by Sealy mattresses with a flat foundation or an adjustable base (such as the Ease® base found here). If you're unsure about the best way to support your bed, check with your manufacturer.

Myth #4: You Need to Flip Your Mattress

While some mattress brands still suggest flipping your mattress every 6 - 9 months, it’s no longer required for many newer models. Sealy® mattresses are now designed with a designated top and bottom that are constructed with different materials. While the top remains a soft feel, the bottom is designed to be sturdier to offer a better foundation to help with the longevity of your mattress. As always, check with your specific mattress manufacturer. Sealy® mattresses should not be flipped but can be rotated from head to foot if desired.

Myth #5: You Don’t Need a Mattress Protector

Accidents happen, especially with pets or young children. From spilled wine to potty training gone wrong, it’s always best to be prepared. That’s why we recommend using a mattress protector. Aside from major accidents, protectors also help maintain your bed’s newness and prevent everyday wear. Given that we spend over 1/3 of our lives in bed, safeguarding your investment is essential.

Myth #6: One Size Fits All

Every person has a unique sleeping position, feel preference, body temperature, and more. What works best for your friend may not fit your needs. Your mattress should align with your individual preferences to ensure you’ll enjoy restful sleep night after night.

For every sleeper, there’s a comfy mattress to match. Check out our Suit Your Sleep Style article for more information and find your perfect fit.
